Radiance provided key 3D software / hardware consulting support and
project management support for Reuters America during the creation of
their 200-foot-tall real-time electronic sign on Times Square, the largest
LED electronic sign in the world at over 9 million pixels of display area. Digital
Radiance provided OpenGL-based software solutions to enable the entire system to
operate fully synchronized at the state-of-the-art level of 60 frames of
real-time 3D animation per second.
Working closely with the sign's designers from Edwin
Schlossberg, Inc. and the sign's software developers from R/GA, Digital
Radiance contributed their years of experience in "bleeding
edge" 3D software and hardware technology to help bring the complex project to
life.
This ground-breaking system comprises 22 networked
computers controlling 11 full-color LED video screens driven in real-time
by high-end 3D graphics cards (3DLabs' Wildcat 5110) on Microsoft Windows 2000-based PCs.
The 11 signs are controlled by the software to create a unified virtual
display space that comprises a total surface area of 3,643 x 2,500 pixels,
spanning 28 floors of Reuters America's new office building at Three Times
Square.
